To perform on a global level we must perform all over the world. While stationed on shore duty, whether in the US or overseas, you will usually have a set work schedule. You may have to stand duty anywhere from every 2 days to once a month depending on how many people are in your command. Some duty stations are open 24 hrs and depending on your job you may have to work night shifts. Shore duty tends to be the most desired type of duty. The are no deployments and no family member has to leave for extended periods of time.

Time Away From Home:

These deployments might be only  3 months or last over a year. Typical deployments are 6 month long and usually done every two years while your attached to a deployable unit. During this time communications with family may range from daily phone calls to interminent emails to no type of contact for weeks.  The Navy has made great strides in an attempt to make deployments easier on sailors and their families. Depending on the ship and its mission, video phone calls, traditional phone calls and or emails that can be placed from aboard ships. When, of course, the mission comes first outside communications can be cut off to protect the ships and their crew.

Deployment Conditions

Life aboard a ship can be hazardous and dangerous. The most dangerous place in the world can be found on an aircraft carrier and the average age of a person working that flight line is 17 years old.  Shipboard life is inherently dangerous. The Navy has Sailors, Airmen, Seabees, and firemen serving all over the world from Norfolk, Va to Iraq.  Some must live in tents in the jungle or under the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Living conditions on board ship can be difficult, repetitive, and tiring. Long work hours sometimes are required to support the mission.  Life onboard submarines can be even more difficult. The Navy takes sail into danger on a daily basis. The only way to be successful, reduce risk and return everyone home with their family is through their training, adhering to safety and world-class sailors.
