Training: In order to be competitive in the civilian job market it is important to have two things: training and experience. Many young people find it difficult to go out to the job market fresh out of school. Without any formal training, which can be expensive, or college education, which takes years and is costly, coupled with no real work experience often puts young job hunters in a vicarious cycle.  The military does not care if you have no education, except a high school diploma, or that you have no experience. All that will be provided to you.

The Navy offers a wide variety of training. All which is at no monetary cost to you. Sometimes you may trade technical training for longer enlistment contracts. Some of the training that the Navy offers is comparable to DeVry or ITT.  Training can range from basic seamanship to Nuclear Power Plants. Much of the training you will receive may relate to the civilian world,  giving you experience that can be used on the outside. Not only might you learn a trade, you will also gain hours of training in other related topics. As you gain rank you will also receive training in leadership and management. Which can be very useful in gaining higher paid jobs later. Once you have received your rate or trade you may also be eligible for even more advance training for your rate. Training can range anywhere from a few days to over a year. Advanced training can also be a few days long or last over 5, 6, or 9 months. Training can be in the form of Navy formal schooling, informal classroom training, civilian schools, seminars, computer based, over the internet or on-the-job.

Experience can be gained as you move up the ranks. Gradually you will take on increased responsibility and duties. Over time you will be put in charge of programs, groups or events.

With proper training and experience you may become a Petty Officer in Charge (POIC) of certain task or responsibilities. Your job related experience will include how to deal with a wide range of people, discipline such as arriving to work on time and in a professional looking uniform, living up to commitment, and taking orders. These qualities are highly sought after in the civilian community.

Think about an employer who has 3 job candidates. One with a college degree only, one with experience only, and you who has served faithfully in the U.S. Navy for four years with formal training, four years of leading and managing sailors and resources, one that has global experience and has been tested under pressure and made good use of their time in the military and earned a college degree. Who do u think will get the job?
